tea partiers advocate for post carbon world

The oil spill, after blaming everyone, find the joy in responsibility

What have we done? While I do not live in the area affected by the Gulf Spill, I am depressed, full of rage and deeply frightened. What future are we leaving our children?

I am so tired of the political bickering. It is time to stop the finger pointing and start taking responsibility. We need to end our reliance on oil, coal and nuclear energy. Yet no politician seems to be talking this way. The politicians are stuck in a system of special-interest money, gotcha politics and biased media.

If people do not begin to act we will have only more of the same from our leaders. Tea partiers - your “drill baby drill” cue card came from the oil industry. But the greedy forces who owned the media, control our food supply, dominate the banking sector and drive America’s politicians awoke a sleeping giant in genuine tea partiers. At America’s core is a self-reliant, can-do spirit to make things better for the next generation.

Why do we need to end our reliance oil, coal and nuclear? Climate change is real. The fact that there is so much confusion on climate change is a sad commentary on the way we currently share information. The clear scientific consensus that the Earth is warming and humans are the primary cause.

Nuclear energy is seen by some as a savior because nuclear energy does not add to climate change. But the lesson glaring to be learned from the gulf oil spill is humility. There is no such thing as a fail safe. It is morally wrong to use nuclear energy when it has hazardous waste lasts for tens of thousands of years.

How do we end our reliance on oil, coal and nuclear? A few oddballs have been lighting the way. A resident on the Minnesota/Canada border uses geothermal to heat his home. It works even on the coldest days. A young farmer family lives off the grid and totally sustainable. Vibrant Amish communities enjoy a simpler, more certain and morally responsible life.

Maybe the transition to a post carbon future can be fun and easy! This does not eliminate hard work. My hands are blistered from digging up a community garden on land owned by a local church. As individuals we need to become hyper-aware of where we are getting our food. Factory farming is wrong.

Politically, I’ve joined the Citizen Climate lobby, which advocates a direct, steadily increasing fee on CO2 with all the revenue returned to every household. Dr. James Hansen calls it the “People’s Climate Stewardship Act.” The fee would start at $15 per ton of CO2 and increase $10-15 a year. Within a decade, green energy would be competitive with coal and oil. At that point, the fee would produce a “carbon dividend” of $1,500 for each person and shield households from the impact of rising energy costs. During a committee hearing last year, Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) said, “I wish we would just talk about a carbon tax, 100 percent of which would be returned to the American people. So there's no net dollars that would come out of the American people's pockets."

There are answers we can agree upon. As we bear witness to the destruction in the gulf, we need the courage to face our pain. Instead of anger, choose action. Grow your own food and buy it from people you know. Conserve energy. Support the People’ Climate Stwardship Act.

the blame dynasty

The Republican governor blames President Obama. The drill baby drill crowd can not face the consequences. Yet I too am locked in the dynamic I want to write about today. I want to break free from this blame dynasty. Let's point fingers. Let's scream at each other. Let's bring even more angst into this world.

Lake is silent. Mountain is still & tall. Feel the pain of eaarth. Feel our disconnection. Discover ways to live sustainably.

What is Joy of Responsibility?

Right action carries its own rewards. In a world of industrial agriculture, climate change, devastating consequences on other life forms, human activities are devasting to our home. Are we a nation of prosaic users because we are a irresponsible people?

I brought the domain name "JoyofResponsiblity" because I know being environmental responsible does not have to be a bummer! After all does not a sustainable world which meets the needs of all sound kinda fun. Can working towards this vision feel like play? And if it feels like play, will we be more likely to leave a better a planet?

In an earlier post, I shared that the gulf oil spill is really my fault. After all I still drive, use heat & electricity and rely on others for my food. How do I change? Today I fermented carrots and ginger, planted more in garden, made a large batch of all organic vegetable bean salad. I want to work towards a new future, a responsible future.

1) a future in balance with the earth
2) a future that gives to future generations and does not take
3) a future without prisons
4) a future where everyone knows how they will get food

I think Joy of Responsibility could be a food brand. No CEOs! No dollars! A "off the money grid" shared system for meeting our physical needs that is not as the cost of spiritual or emotional needs... but a system which synergistically meet needs. At the simplest level, this means community gardening and then gathering together to prepare food.

I like to see bare strip malls transformed to community food places. Places where people can go and exchange their time for food. Just as people who seek to be "off grid" energy wise still sometimes need generators, the joy of responsibility brand could sell prepared food.

the oil spill is my fault

This oil spill is really my fault. I am a treehugger, liberal, nature loving utopian-seeking socialist. Yes, I think everyone deserves a good education, health care and a clean environment. Plus I think a vibrant middle class creates a stronger economy. It is when a few people at the top horde all the resources, that economy suffesr. In third world countries, a few extremely rich people exist while the vast majority of people live in poverty. In the 70's, people like my dad worked in middle class union jobs like truck drivers and earned enough to afford houses, health care, dental care, two vacations a year plus a good retirement. I know the problems of oil. I read end of oil. I know climate change is real. I know the oceans are being damaged. I can see the urban sprawl. Yet I drive my car and do nothing!!!! Oh maybe I bitch at you. And maybe you bitch at me. But why? What's the point of this anger? There is a joy in responsibility. We need to figure out a new system OUTSIDE of government. I continue to advocate policies, a carbon fee and dividend. (this would give every American family about $1,000 a year for a dividend from oil & coal,,, see citizens climate change lobby for more information) But I want to help build local, self reliant communities. I am starting by renting a $50 garden plot from a local church. Instead of bitching what are you doing?

biggest industry in US is food processing?

It was a glorious day. Sun is shining. My family went to Valleyfair, then I took the dog to the dog park and picked up Salmon for dinner. So much to be thankful for!

And yet the oil spill continues, our farming practices are greatly harming the earth, global climate change continues.

Our practices have consequences on all other life forms and yet our life continues.

Reaction to Kerry Lieberman environmental thing

I, like probably most Americans, am very confused by this bill. Environmental organizations I trust say this is a give-away to the very greedy interests that have caused so much damage to our planet AND our children's planet. God I hate human greed! I really must get rid of it myself. I feel so much outrage over the oil spill. I feel so much SHAME. So much sadness. I am so tired of the way we are living. We take so much from this earth. Is is because we are so selfish that we need to take so many drugs for depression. Greed and selfishness create sorrow. Responsibility and generosity create joy. Human arrogance is again on full display on the Gulf oil spill. We know nuclear waste last for hundreds of thousands of years but we can have "fail safe" methods so thinking and caring are not necessary. The big solution is to evolve past greed, fear and hate. Until then, a fee and dividend makes most sense. A fee on carbon that is evenly distributed to all Americans would create jobs. And with jobs, many humans will feel safe enough to care again.

Oil Splll, Action not Anger

Millions of my family members are dying. I walk in the woods and I find some comfort. The sun, the trees, dark soft ground. Then we leave park. I can feel the difference!

The oil spill. I feel the struggling sea turtle. I can see the dead zones in the oceans. My mother says "oh they discovered that climate change does not really exist."

I respond in Anger. Action not Anger. I want to make action not anger my calling
